I was at lunch today with a friend who is a prominent business man in Pittsburgh. We meet once a year to talk through NOH's strategy and our goals for the upcoming year. I always leave encouraged from our conversation. Today he left me with a great nugget of truth that I want to share with you.
He learned this principle from his grandfather who immigrated to America in the early part of the 20th century and built a very successful business from the ground up. The principle is this:
There are only two kinds of people in a meeting - the thermometer and the thermostat. The thermostats set the temperature of the room and the thermometers rise and fall according to that temperature that is set. As a leader we need to be thermostats-we need to be setting the temperature with our staffs or the people we are working with. Others will rise to the temperature that we set!
So lets be the thermostats of our organziations!!
